Every commercial aimed at teens tells them all they have to do is use the product of the day and they'll have clean, fresh skin free of blemishes. Did you know, however, that there are societies in which teens do not experience acne at all?
In our society in North America, we do our teens two disservices when it comes to skincare: one, we tell them they are flawed and somehow not beautiful if they have breakouts, and then we tell them that it's perfectly natural to have breakouts because of their teenage hormone fluctuations. How confusing!
The first of these is unfortunate because it is not kind nor productive to imbue anyone with the feeling that they are 'less than,' particularly at a time when they need to be boosted in terms of self-esteem and confidence. To insinuate that clear skin somehow makes a person cooler, more attractive or worst, more worthy, is to undermine the very self-esteem we need our teens to feel at this vulnerable time.
Additionally, with respect to the 'natural' occurrence of acne, this is a fallacy, as can be seen by the fact that not all teens, and in particular millions of teens on very different diets and living different lifestyles, do not have acne. Thus, telling our kids to treat the symptom rather than the cause hurts not only their egos but their health as well. If true healthy eating, drinking enough filtered water and getting plenty of exercise were part of every teen's life, acne products would have no one to market to.
One important key to being healthy from the inside out is diet, which in North America is nothing short of disastrous. From the chemicals in the soil and all the way up the food chain, to the imbalance of healthy fats even in foods which once contained them (such as grains and meats being heavily weighted on the side of Omega 6's rather than balanced with Omega 3's), to the insidious amounts of high-glycemic corn and corn sugar in most diets, it is no wonder that teens' bodies and faces pay a heavy price, never mind those of the adults they become.
Try a few things, and wait while your body reacts through the withdrawal from chemicals process (part of detox): drink plenty of well-filtered water; eat organic vegetables, mostly raw, as the mainstay of your diet; cut back on animal products, especially meat and dairy; get regular exercise. These few generic changes pack a powerful health punch, and not only will help with teen acne but will also help any man or woman lose weight and begin to feel significantlybetter. There are many possible additions to this lifestyle change, but this is a good start, and as an added bonus is good for the environment too!
